Know what you’re up against — Otodata Tag, decoded
If you’re booking a removal, you deserve to understand the device. Tag is roughly 75% of all dealer-installed trackers in the GTA right now — here’s the full picture, from FCC filings, the manufacturer’s own documentation, and our own teardown.
Who makes it
Tag is a product of Otodata Wireless Network Inc., a Montreal company. Their main business is actually propane-tank telemetry — reusing the same low-power wireless platform to build a stolen-vehicle recovery beacon. Co-founded by André Boulay (previously founded Boomerang Tracking, sold to LoJack in 2007) and Jason M. Gallovich (Otodata EVP, named FCC responsible party on every Tag filing). Sold in Ontario / Quebec only, primarily through Speedy Glass / Lebeau and OEM dealer F&I desks.

Otodata’s full FCC catalog (grantee code 2ADQF) is public: fccid.io/2ADQF — 16 active filings, mostly propane tank monitors, plus the two vehicle Tag generations.
How the technology actually works
Both generations are sub-GHz Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum beacons, NOT real-time GPS trackers. The device operates in the 903.28–925.36 MHz ISM band at roughly 1 watt, hopping across 50 channels. It does NOT have:
- A cellular (LTE / 4G / NB-IoT) radio — cannot dial out
- A GPS / GNSS receiver — cannot calculate its own position
- A SIM card
- Wi-Fi
- (V2 only) Bluetooth — cannot use nearby phones as proxy receivers
What it DOES: wakes briefly, broadcasts its unique ID + battery + tamper status into the air, then sleeps. Recovery only works if an Otodata fixed-receiver gateway is within ~1–3 km LOS of the vehicle. Position is calculated at the gateway side by direction-finding multiple receivers — not by the device itself. Battery is a non-rechargeable lithium thionyl chloride cell rated 15+ year service life.

In plain English: this is a recovery beacon, not a surveillance tool. It can’t tell anyone where you went to dinner. But it IS broadcasting your vehicle’s heartbeat By Appointment, and you didn’t necessarily agree to that.
Where Otodata typically hides it
Tag is designed as multiple nano-modules distributed across the vehicle — making removal hard by design. Our hunt list for any 2021+ Ontario vehicle:
- Under the rear seat cushion — primary module + battery (~60% of finds)
- Behind A-pillar trim (driver and passenger sides)
- Behind C-pillar / quarter panel
- Inside trunk liner / spare-tire well
- Headliner above dome light — quiet RF zone, hardest to detect
- Front door VIN etching (not removable — just glass)

The patent reality — surprising
The patents that protected this architecture were filed by Boomerang Tracking in 2001–2003 (US 7,091,835, US 6,498,565, US 7,049,942). All three expired between 2021 and 2023. Otodata’s only active vehicle-recovery patent is US 9,369,838 (2012, expires ~2032) — it covers smartphone-based positioning, which Otodata doesn’t even use in production. The technology is now effectively public domain.
Who installed it and how much they made
In Ontario, Tag is installed by Speedy Glass / Lebeau (the exclusive authorized installer) and a network of OEM dealer F&I desks. Charged to you on the bill of sale at $400–$650, includes ~5–7 years of monitoring service. Insurance-side pitch:

Your consent rights (PIPEDA)
Under PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act), GPS / location data is personal information. Collection requires express, informed consent. A dealer slipping “Tag Anti-Theft” onto your bill of sale without a separately-signed disclosure is on shaky legal ground. If your bill of sale has no explicit Tag addendum or signed acknowledgement, you have a complaint path to:

Why people call us
- Didn’t consent at the dealer. Dealership slipped “Tag Anti-Theft” onto the bill of sale without a real signature. PIPEDA says location data needs informed consent — you have grounds to remove it.
- Switching insurance providers. The new insurer doesn’t require the Tag — you want the surveillance removed and the comp surcharge dropped.
- Selling your vehicle. Buyers don’t want a dealer-keyed tracker on their new car. Removing it is a clean-title move.
